Biography
Realizing her love of education at a young age, Shayla played the role of an educator at every opportunity. With her natural propensity for mathematics, she began tutoring while in high school. In 2007, Shayla was diagnosed with a genetic condition that required brain surgery, this limited her ability to expand on her skills and talents. However, she applied her passion where she could, homeschooling her own children and developing a personal tutoring company, Logical Learning. Among the first in her area, Logical Learning utilized online whiteboards to expand its student population. This allowed Shayla to reach geographically diverse students and harness the power of technology to improve education. In addition, Logical Learning focuses on the why rather than the how of mathematics. Providing students a solid foundation to build their mathematical knowledge.
Shayla's educational background includes a certificate in online teaching from Quality Matters, a MS in Education from Johns Hopkins University, and multiple undergraduate degrees in mathematics. Having a strong training in mathematics, Shayla's graduate work in education focused on a deep understanding of instruction, digital age learners, and pedagogy as well as integrating technology and eLearning.
Being an online online student, Shayla has a unique understanding of what it takes to develop an effective eLearning classroom. This includes proper integration of technology, creating instructor presence in a course, scaffolding, multimedia principles for instruction, master-oriented feedback, and providing multiple means of representation to name a few. Shayla has been working in both K-12 and Higher Education in every capacity. A mentor, teaching assistant, and instructor, Shayla believes that the educator-student dynamic is that of a team. She works together with students to deepen their understanding, foster a love of mathematics, and reach their goals.
As a life-long leaner, Shayla continues to take graduate courses in mathematics and is always looking for professional development opportunities. Her current interests include mathematical composition, and teaching students how to communicate mathematics in the digital landscape.
